It's that time of year where apples will soon literally begin to fall off the trees. We have some great local apple farms in North Carolina. Visiting is a fun family outing and the bounty is perfect for inexpensive crafts and thrifty recipes.
Floating Apple Candles
These are great for lighting an outdoor party or for a creative centerpiece. Float the candles in large bowls or metal tubs in a safe, non-flammable location.
Shrunken Apple Heads
A little creepy but perfect for Halloween or a wacky theme dinner! Martha Stewart has a good tutorial.
Teacher Gifts Dipped in Chocolate
Now that school is back in full swing, it's time to thank those special souls for all that they do. Get the kids in on the action and dip apples in your flavor of choice. Caramel is always a fun go-to but butterscotch and white chocolate are yummy as well. Fancy the apples up a bit by shaking on sprinkles, crushed cookies, corn flakes or granola.

- Apple Butterfly Stamps
Apple Bird Feeder
This is a great way to put those not so perfect apples to good use and to create some bird watching opportunities. There are several methods.
- Core apple and push seeds into the top half. Use a string through the cored part to hang.
- Core and then coat apple in peanut butter. Roll in bird seed, cracked corn, crushed peanuts or black-oil sunflower seeds.
